Golf in Ayrshire & The South West

OVERVIEW

The South Western part of Scotland that borders the Northern part of England comprises the regions of Argyll, the Isles, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway. The area offers a mix of unspoilt natural beauty of the highlands and the coast, little islands that serve as great outdoor escapes and a thriving arts and culture scene.

Golf wise, this region has some inspiring links steeped in history. Ayrshire has the lion’s share of the most prominent ones – 3 Open Championship venues – the inaugural albeit former Prestwick, the current Royal Troon and the Turnberry Ailsa in addition to the modern Dundonald links. However, there is much more beyond these celebrated golf courses with plenty of character – e.g. one can go links golf hopping the Ayrshire islands and while doing so play at The Machrie, which in the early 1900s attracted James Braid, John Taylor and Harry Vardon to compete for a 100 pound prize.

Golfcross – If in Dumfries, head to Solway Links to play golf with a golf ball shaped like a rugby ball and play 18 rectangular goals suspended in mid-air as opposed to 18 circular holes with everything else, including the course and equipment being the same.
